Xenon HID Lights – Are They Legal?

Yes and no. It’s legal for new users – they just have to make sure that they purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps if they want to upgrade their recently-bought vehicle to Xenon HID,

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot be approved, because it is only suitable for new vehicles. However, this does not mean that Xenon HID lights are banned totally. It would be possible to upgrade your headlights, although the driver should also meet the safety standards required for new vehicles.

An HID light that is sold in the after market should therefore follow these rules:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector and bulb) shall be e-marked and customized to ECE 98. That can only be done by the headlamp suppliers who should examine the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. After it is fitted to the vehicle, it must include headlamp cleaning and self-leveling. This can be for the headlamp or in the vehicle suspension. Some luxury cars have “self-levelling” suspensions which are also acceptable. Also, the dipped beam must remain with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be kept in good working order, cleaned and adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

There are ways to upgrade your vehicle and follow the law at the same time. Make sure that you install your HID car lights according to the standard regulations in order to maintain safety and security on the road.
